LEN - Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Nanotechnology at ITP: Researchers innovate in the production of electrodes for water treatment.

26/05/2023

At the Institute of Technology and Research (ITP), the Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Nanotechnology (LEN) stands out as a center of excellence in research related to the development of materials and methodologies for electrode production. The researchers in this laboratory have been dedicated to advancing studies on electrodes with applications in both environmental and energy production areas, contributing to innovative solutions in the field of Process Engineering.

One of the key researchers in this laboratory is Dr. Katlin Ivon Barrios Eguiluz, who has distinguished herself for her work in training highly qualified human resources for the job market, as well as leading research on materials and methodologies for electrode production. Dr. Katlin is recognized for her pioneering and innovative work and is one of the references in the field of electrochemistry and nanotechnology at ITP.

Dr. Giancarlo Richard Salazar Banda, another renowned researcher in the laboratory, is dedicated to developing unconventional electrodes for water treatment. His goal is to achieve high efficiency in this process using different methods, such as the use of ionic liquids, which earned the laboratory a gold medal as the best patent granted in Brazil by the World Intellectual Property Organization. Additionally, Dr. Giancarlo explores the use of innovative systems such as laser energy and microwaves to reduce electrode production costs and make them more accessible.

The infrastructure of the Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Nanotechnology at ITP is considered state-of-the-art, housing various relevant equipment for conducting research. Of particular note is the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy coupled with electrochemistry equipment, which allows for the instantaneous measurement of products formed in electrochemical or chemical reactions, providing detailed information on the species formed at the exact moment they occur.

Master's and doctoral students from the postgraduate program in Process Engineering at Tiradentes University are also members of the Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Nanotechnology, contributing their research and actively participating in the laboratory's activities.

Dara Silva Santos, a postdoctoral researcher, is focused on the development of nanomaterials for alcohol electrooxidation, with the aim of contributing to the creation of environmentally sustainable devices compared to non-renewable sources such as fossil fuel combustion.

Aline Rezende Dória, also a postdoctoral researcher, is focused on an effluent treatment project, seeking to develop materials through unconventional methods to deal with water contaminated with toxic substances and pollutants. Her work is of utmost relevance for pollution reduction and environmental preservation.

Additionally, Ana Carolina, a doctoral student, is developing dimensioned anodes with the aim of degrading organic compounds through the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Her studies have shown promise for the use of these anodes in industrial environments, demonstrating high efficiency in experiments.

The laboratory has also dedicated research to the use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. The researchers have explored the use of nanoparticles and nanowires, which are about 10 million times smaller than 1 cm, to produce highly efficient materials.

One of the laboratory's goals is the development of systems that use alcohol, such as ethanol, as a replacement for hydrogen, a strategic strategy for Brazil, one of the world's largest alcohol producers. Additionally, the researchers are focused on the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value-added products, seeking solutions to reduce pollution and contribute to circular economy and carbon neutrality.

The research carried out at the Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Nanotechnology at ITP stands out for its potential impact on society, contributing to the training of qualified human resources, the development of innovative solutions for water treatment, and the pursuit of sustainable alternatives in energy production. With a dedicated team and state-of-the-art infrastructure, this laboratory continues to push the boundaries of science and technology, making significant advances for society and the environment.
