The Laboratory of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases study the etiological agents of infectious and parasitic diseases, as well as the vectors that cause them, in areas of high importance to the northeastern region of Brazil, specifically the state of Sergipe. The main research areas are: Human and Animal Parasitology, and Molecular Parasitology. Research conducted includes:
- Mapping of endemic foci of mansonic schistosomiasis and evaluation of PCE control actions;
- Parasitological evaluation of mollusc vectors;
- Parasitological evaluation of animals with importance in the regional production chain (oysters, mussels, fish, goats, and pigs) and regional fauna;
- Evaluation of the changing populations of triatomines, sandflies, and Aedes aegypti, and the transmission rates for diseases that impact the Northeast region of Brazil;
- Control of vectors and other ectoparasites;
- Parasitological mapping of water reservoirs and waterborne diseases.
